Overview
For many years the Federated Suns did not need numerous armed transports for its infantry unit, but the Clans taught the AFFS a leason they will not soon forget. Many infantry units that could not keep up with the lightning warfare the Clans waged were either destroyed or captured. In May of 3056, General Motors won a contract to produce a new generation of armored and armed infantry transports. The GM plant on Salem was immediately upgraded once the design was accepted, and it has been turning out the new infantry transports every since.
Capabilities
The AFFS gave GM engineers some very specific criteria to meet with the new APC design. The first was that the chassis had to be able to accept either a wheeled, tracked and hover drive system like the current Heavy APC. The second was that it be able to support the infantry it was carrying with both direct and indirect fire. The third was that it be well armored to allow the APC to effectively deploy AND remove its infanrty fighting force from battle. These three points gave the engineers numerous headaches, but after almost a year of testing and modifications they were able to present to the QD a excellent APC design which was able to meet all the criteria and more.
Engineers and designers realized early in the design phase that they would have to include a fusion engine to meet the three design points the AFFS demanded. This allowed the design to obtain the speeds necessary to successfully deploy and retrieve the infantry cargo in the face of a Clan assault and carry enough weapons to support that infantry. Since the design was equipped with a fusion engine it was decided to put a limited number of energy weapons on the APC. This would ensure that during extended campaigns the APC was never without weapons because of ammunition shortages. The fusion engine allowed three ChisComp 39 medium lasers to be mounted on a turret. For indirect fire and long range fire a Federated 5-shot LRM launcher was placed above the medium lasers. The last weapon installed on the turret was a Browning machine gun. This allowed the APC to dispatch enemy infantry that managed to get in too close. With these weapons on the turret they had a full 360 degree firing field and could bring their firepower quickly to bear on a target. Additionally, a second Browning machine gun was placed in the front of the APC. This allowed the APC to keep its nose towards and lay down covering fire against enemy units while its own infantry was deployed from the rear. (Note: the tracked and wheeled variants have two machine guns on the front hull and the wheeled variant has a second Federated LRM launcher)
The infantry compartment was designed in a way that troop deployment and retrival was fast and efficient. Additionally a small cargo bay was added on the firewall seperating the crew compartment and infantry bay. This allowed the infantry to carry several of the larger support weapons available for increased firepower or equipment for special operations.
The armor used to plate the APC is produced by the Kallon Industries plant on Kirklin. Their new ferro fibrous composite shows great promise and they are able to increase production at their plant ot meet the demands of the GM production line.
The Targeting & Tracking system along with the communications system is produced by Mendham Electronics on Mendham. The Garret Fib and Garret Supremesound both are excellent systems with a proven track record that will not let the APC down.
Deployment
The Wrangler is being deployed to all the front line RCT Infantry Brigades to replace the Maxim Hovertank and other miscellaneous transports.
