Overview
The success of the Schiltron OmniTank prompted General Motors of Kathil to attempt a design of their own in the hopes that the Federated Suns government would purchase large numbers of the new vehicle for their Front-line Regimental Combat Teams. Not wanting to go alone on such a large venture, GM owners contacted Kallon Industries of Kirklin with the proposal of a join venture. After much review and planning both companies agreed to work together to produce the first Federated Suns OmniTank.
Capabilities
Knowing that the majority of the new tanks would find their way into the Regimental Combat Teams of the AFFS, the designers decided to make the new tank as versitile as possible. After much debate it was decided to make the design a hovertank, which would allow them to give the vehicle the best speed and armor profile possible and still leave enough room for weaponry. Engineers installed the new Vlar 265 XL engine which gave the tank and impressive
cruising speed of over 100 kph, with a flank speed of 160 kph. This was sure to allow the tank to get into any situation, inflict considerable damage to enemy forces and then withdraw in good order.
The armor is the newest Kallon Unity Weave Ferro-Fibrous armor composite that is in use on the two tanks being produced by Kallon (the Challenger X MBT and Partisan Heavy Tank). This composite had proven quite durrable on both earlier tanks adn promised to provide the protection the new OmniTank needed.
Because the new OmniTank would need a powerful computer to handle the diverse blend of weapons to be placed on the OmniTank, Kallon modified the Kallon Lock-On for use in the hovertank. This powerful targeting and tracking
system is used on the Challenger MBT and would provide superior capabilities to the smaller tank. Added to this was the Kallon Secure Net Communications system that is so successful on the Partisan Heavy Tank.
While the T&T and communications were being installed another team of engineers and weapons specialists were preparing a list of configurations for the new OmniTank. Much though went into how large the turret of the tank
should be made, and after many tests it was decided to allow the hovertank the capability to carry up to 10 tons of weaponry or equipment in the turret. This allowed the tank to carry over half of its weaponry in the turret for the
widest possible firing arc. After the final design of the turret was done and the turret installed it was time to finally begin live fire tests.
Early tests went badly for the OmniTank as the turret radically altered the flow of air over the tank when added, causing the design to tilt dangerously to the rear. After months of delays the problem was finally solved by simply adding a small spoiler to the rear of the tank that was to be manually deployed when the hovertank was outfitted with a turret. Many successful weapon configurations were tried with the new OmniTank, and specialists eliminated many, but it was decided to keep many of them also.
When it was time to name the XR-455 only one name came to mind because of the hovertanks speed and armament ...... Wasp. While it did not possess the ability to kill an opponent, it definately had a "sting" that would make any
enemy remember it!
Battle History
This new OmniHovertank has yet to see actual combat.
Variants
Of the many configurations tested, these were the most successful. The Wasp OmniHovertank has the most configurations of any Omni-vehicle or OmniMech currently designed in the Inner Sphere.
Deployment
The Wasp OmniHovertank is being deployed with units of the Davion Light Guards, Ceti Hussars and Deneb Light Cavalry. These units are sure to give the Wasp the action that will determine weather the design fails or stands up to
its expectations.
