Overview
In the early years of the Federated Commonwealth, Prince Hanse Davion made the decision to correct a problem with the AFFC's lighter BattleMech units. While the Rifleman and JagerMech were able to provide effective Anti-Air support in heavier units, lighter units which relied on speed and manuverability had no such support. Unfortunately the War of 3039, then the Clan invasion upset these plans to design and produce the 'Mech. It wasn't until recently that engineers brought out the plans and once again began work on the Sampson.

Capabilities
The Sampson was envisioned many years ago to provide Anti-Air support for lighter 'Mech units. When engineers once again began work on the design they realized that the Sampson could be further improved by including updated technology that was unavailable when the 'Mech was first designed.
Originally designed to be equipped with a Armstromg J11 Autocannon and two Martell Medium Lasers, engineers decided to rework the design significantly. By including the new Extra-Light engine and Endosteel, a Armstrong Class-B ClusterGun could now be mounted. This would significantly improve the Sampons ability to knock enemy air units out of action. The two Magna Medium Lasers were upgraded to the newer Blazefire Longshot ER Medium Lasers. Heat would not be a problem since engineers upgraded the single heat sinks to double heat sinks, eliminating any possibility of overheating. Enough room was left over to allow the the engineers to install the Apple Churchill ECM to futher reduce enemy T&T system capabilities.
Designers also modified the Garret D2j from the Infamous Rifleman to fit into the Sampson. Unlike with the Longeye, the Garret T-11A Communications system operates perfectly when modified to the Sampson.

Battle History
The Sampson is just now entering production.

Variants
Like the Longeye, the Sampson has a prototype currently ungoing testing that removes the Armstrong LB-X, one ER Medium Laser and the ECM .....replacing it with a Rotary AC/5, ER Small Laser and the new Targeting Computer. If the variant of the Longeye that is equipped the same way proves to be a success, then you can expect to see the same kind of modification in the Sampson.

Notable 'Mechs & MechWarriors

Lft Jacob McDougal
Lft McDougal is the MechWarrior currently testing the Sampson. Lft McDougal pushes his machine to the extreme limits, often inventing new ways to get to airborne units and destroying them. On several occasions he has teamed up with a Sprint Helicopter and lets the Sprint scout for him and lead unsuspecting enemy units into an ambush by his Sampson. So far test pilots have been so busy trying to down the Sprint Helicopter or being distracted by it they completely missed the Sampson, which was easliy able to down them in battlefield simulations.

Deployment
Like the Longeye, the Sampson is expected to be assigned in lance size units to all light 'Mech units in the Federated Suns as soon as they become available. The Davion Light Guards and the Deneb Light Cavalry regiments are especially looking forward to receiving this new battlefield unit.
