Originally designated as the Ekatrina (Katherine) class, the Shpaga (Sword) class patrol boats owes its existence, like many other planetary militia projects of recent years, to Katherine Steiner-Davion's increased spending on traditionally low priority units. The first Ekatrina's were designed to replace the Pobeda (Victory)-class patrol boats, which had
been scrapped in 3032 as they were no longer sea worthy. No replacement was ordered until 3061 due to lack of funds. Murmansk Cooperative Naval Yard was given the task of designing and building the new patrol class vessel for the Novaia Zemlia Planetary Militia's small naval force. The keel of the Ekatrina was laid in March 3062.
The designers and promoters of Novaia Zemlia's first new naval vessel since the reign of Ian Davion spared no expense in the creation fo the new ship. The massive Murmansk Heavy Naval 310 engine can propel the ship upwards of 60 kph on calm waters. The primary armament of the Ekatrina was the impressive SLVZ Udar Molnii (Thunderbolt) autocannon, which
had been adapted for naval use. Backing up the amply supplied main gun are two SLVZ Morenskaia Strela (Sea Arrow) Missle Systems. Rounding out the vessels armament are two machinguns mounted on the ship's stern. The most expensive piece of equipment, however, is the remarkably robust MCNY-Orel Tuman(fog)-7 electronic suite. Developed at great expense, the Tuman-7 is an extravagance for such a vessel. Capable of blanketing the area surrounding the ship in electronic noise, the Tuman-7 occupies twice the volume of comparable frontline systems. Its desingers are confident, however, that its preformance is just as good. Critics of the program are quick to challenge the necessity of such an expensive system in a mere PUG.
The eight person crew of the is in tight, but comfortable quarters. Ample cargo room allows for extened patrol time. At the expense of endurance, the cargo hold can be quickly transformed to carry a platoon of infantry.
The Ekatrina successfully completed trials in the autum of 3065. The second of the class, the Snezhnaia Lisa (Snow Fox) was activated on New Year's Day 3066. Other hulls have
been laid down, but it remains to be seen at this point in time if they will be completed due to growing concerns overcost. Following the Allied victory in the FCCW, the class and lead vessel, were rechristianed Shpaga.
