Overview
    One of the most feared Clan 'Mechs that the Federated Commonwealth faced during the invasion was the Nova, or Black Hawk, a machine devastating in combat on all fronts. Kallon Industries, of Talon, proposed the Penetrator based on their review and subsequent analysis of battle footage. The Penetrator uses much of the Nova design in its concept, especially the primary configuration. With Civil War looking inevitable, the Federated Suns State Command was looking to rapidly improve the 'Mechs already in their arsenal. The Penetrator was chosen because its lack of advanced components would allow it to be easily upgraded in the field. These simple upgrades would allow the Penetrators in service in the Federated Suns to compete with the designs in the Lyran Alliance. Meanwhile Kallon Industries was re-tolling their assembly line for a much more radical change in the Penetrator, a change that would make the 'Mech truly fearsome.

Capabilities
     The modifications to make the 6D model are designed to allow the 'Mech to be modified in the field. These modifications allow the 'Mech to sustain a higher rate of laser fire and allow greater maneuverability without decreasing the armor protection of this successful design. Two of the Sutel Precision Medium Pulse Lasers have been removed and the MacArthur Anti-Missile system was also removed. In their place four double heat sinks and the Guardian Electronic Countermeasures system were installed. Even though the removal of the MacArthur system did increase the vulnerability of the 'Mech, the Guardian ECM made the design a more difficult target for the more advanced weaponry available on most front line 'Mechs.

     The 6T model will be produced at the Talon facilities and involve a much more radical design change in the Penetrator. The internal structure of the 'Mech was changed to endosteel. While this did decrease the space available, it still allowed enough room to make the required changes. As with the 6D model, two of the Sutel Medium Pulse Lasers were removed as was the MacArthur AMS. In their place was placed four double heat sinks and the new NAIS Targeting Computer. The Penetrator of old was a great laser barrage vehicle, but the new Penetrator would allow the most accurate fire available to any 'Mech in the Inner Sphere. This new variant was a pure hunter and no other 'Mech would be able to escape the deadly accurate fire.


Battle History
     Currently their are no known engagements between this variant and any other 'Mechs, but that is sure to change with the looming Civil War.

Variants
     With OmniMech technology becoming more widespread, the designers decided to make a few small changes to the Penetrator that would allow for a simple change in the weaponry of both of the new models. The weapon connectors that allow for the change out of weapons pods in OmniMechs were installed in the connections to the Sutel Medium Pulse Lasers to allow for a slight weapons change. The medium pulse lasers could now be changed out for simple medium lasers if the pulse lasers were damaged. While this did not make the 'Mech a true OmniMech, it did allow for a little more flexability for technicians trying to repair damaged equipment and make the 'Mech combat ready again after being damaged. If this proves successful, the Penetrator might be the first 'Mech in the Federated Suns to be converted to a OmniMech, much like the Orion, Firestarter and Blackjack designs by other realms.

Deployment
    The Penetrator was considered a gamble by some military experts in the Federated Commonwealth. Despite the hope that the Penetrator would match the Nova in one-on-one combat, it is not likely that a 'Mech of its size can surpass the superior technology of the Clan 'Mech. There-fore, the Penetrator was put through the most rigorous and extensive testing possible. Virtually all likely battle situations were simulated, and the Penetrator scored as expected in all.
    The Kallon Industries conglomerate has agreed to keep the Federated Commonwealth as the exclusive customer for the 75-ton behemoth. Kallon has been given the rights to produce the initial order and two additional guaranteed runs in the near future. The first Penetrator was shipped in July 3053. Since that time, the remainder of the initial run has been produced and dispersed among various companies in the Federated Commonwealth military.
     The new Penetrators will be supplied to the front line forces of the Federated Suns, replacing or augmenting Penetrators already in the field. The 6D and 6T will be a welcome addition to the forces in the looming Civil War.
