Overview
For years their had been rumors of a hidden Star League Supply Depot on Brundage, and for many years people had traveled to the water poor world in search of its great treasures. It was not until early 3056 that the Star League depot was found by the descendants of a tribe of American Navaho Indians that had settled the world centuries earlier. While drilling a new water well for their corn fields, their drill bit continually broke at the 40 meter mark all across the valley. While attempting to drill their last water well, the ground started to shake, and everyone ran for their lives. Everyone watched in horror as the entire drilling rig sank into the ground. As the ground stopped shaking the drillers ventured to the hole in the ground and what they saw filled their hearts with joy ...... they had found the missing Star League depot that their tribe had originally looked for centuries ago! Weeks slowly passed as the people walked the huge complex and cataloged their find. The tribe realized they had not just found a depot, but components for the assembly of a small factory. Several members of the tribe with technical experience came up with a bold plan, assemble the factory in the mountain depot and begin producing BattleMechs. Knowing they did not have all the expertise they needed, they quietly contacted Kallon Weapon Industries for technical help. Two years later, Spirit Mountain Weaponries began producing their first prototype, the Navaho. Designed for extended operations away from friendly lines, the Navaho has only energy weapons, and is jump capable. This 'Mech was also designed with a regular fusion plant, which reduced the probability of combat damage to the engine, making the design cheaper and more survivable.
Capabilities
The Navaho is intended as a raider BattleMech. With its all energy weapons load it can conduct operations behind enemy lines for as long as the pilot can survive. Using many tried and tested components in this design guaranteed that equipment problems would not hinder this designs ability to conduct extended operations. Jump Jets were also added to the design to give this 'Mech maximum mobility on the battlefield, and allow it to traverse difficult terrain quickly. Two trials of the prototype were conducted on Brundage, and included two ‘Mechs that were dropped into the planets harsh deserts for a two day test. An unexpected storm struck the area where the test pilots were dropping and contact with the two was immediately lost. After four days the vicious storm broke and no contact could be made with the pilots. An exhaustive search found no sign of the two lost machines or their pilots. After a twelve day search was called off and the program looked to be cancelled, but a radio operator who refused to give up hope picked up a faint signal. The pilots had indeed survived the storm, but the drop had scattered them deeper into the desert than they had intended. They had fought their way through the desert storm and the subsequent heat after the storm died out. Their two day test had turned into a two week test of endurance and survivability. The pilots were rescued and the two 'Mechs were immediately inspected to see how they had faired in the unexpectedly long test. The actuators were close to the point of shutdown, the coolant system was almost empty, the fusion engines were experiencing glitches, and the communications system had been damaged by the storm, BUT both prototypes were still operational and managed to pass a live fire exercise later that day in their current condition. The design was immediately cleared for production and the Federated Commonwealth immediately ordered the first three production runs. Additional production runs have been made available to mercenary units in FedCom employ and line units in the regular army.
Battle History
Willis Franklin pilots the "Wind Walker". He is assigned to the Davion Light Guards as part of Gemini Company, a deep strike unit. On one raid against the Capellan Confederation, Lft Franklin became separated from his unit upon the completion of their assignment, the destruction of a supply depot behind the enemy lines. Knowing he could not make his way through all the forces between him and his dropship and with his communications system damaged, Lft Franklin took his machine deep into the desert mountains to the west, knowing that that this raid was to prepare for a strike at the world a month later. He had to survive until then and hoped he could reach friendly forces when they arrived. Lft Franklin only brought his machine out of hiding a few times to raid for what he needed to survive or to fight his way away from the local militia that was hunting him down. His beloved Wind Walker was beginning to show signs from the lack of maintenance and continued combat. Both his primary Large Laser and one secondary medium laser was out due to lack of maintenance and his 'Mechs systems were already running on secondary systems when the 5th Crucis Lancers arrived. Lft Franlkin managed to link up with friendly forces, though his 'Mech was barely functional. Wind Walker had saved his life and kept him safe. Lt Franklin has since turned down several offers to move up to a better machine, instead choosing to keep the Wind Walker.
Variants
Only one variant has been seen, and it was the result of battle damage. One Navaho had it ER Large Laser and all of its ER Medium Lasers knocked out, and were replaced by standard Large and Medium Lasers. While the pilot did like the higher rate of fire allowed by the older weapons, the range lost did cause the 'Mech to suffer more damage in the engagement. Spirit Mountain technicians are offering this refit to militia and mercenary units that can not afford the more expensive weapons.
Notable 'Mechs & MechWarriors
Leftenant Willis Franklin
Still assigned to the Light Guards, Lft Franklin still pilots the Wind Walker and keeps his life saving machine in top working order. Since his month long hide and seek game in the Capellan Confederation, Lft Franklin has become an accomplished technician and keeps some simple tools in a special compartment beside the Wind Walkers head. He has promised to never again be caught in a situation where simple maintenance will cause his beloved 'Mech to become un-operational
Senior Test Pilot Samantha Batson
A novice test pilot at the time her and Jennifer Langholm were lost in the trial to test the Navaho in desert conditions, Samantha has risen to become the senior test pilot at Spirit Mountain Weaponries. Since that fateful test, Samantha has insisted on putting all new designs through the most rigorous testing in the planets deserts to find any possible faults that may cause other pilots to die. Her love for the Navaho has spawned several improvements in the environmental and life support systems that have been credited with saving the lives of three Mechwarriors, who names she know by heart.
Deployment
Navaho BattleMechs are scattered through out units in the Federated Commonwealth, but the Federated Suns half of the realm particularly like the design. It has been assigned to units that specialize in raids or deep penetration strikes where supplies will be limited. The Davion Light Guards and Crucis Lancer Brigade have the largest concentration of these 'Mechs
