Overview
Designer notes: "Realizing the limitations of both premier battlecruisers of the time, we at Di Tron and the Star League Procurement Department decided to correct the flaws of these two ships in their new design. The first problem addressed was the ships weaponry. Both the Cameron and the Black Lion carry massive naval autocannon batteries, but the limited ammunition these ships carried did not allow for the extended deployments required in the periphery campaigns. Designers decided to use the same class autocannons as the Black Lion carried, the Scarborough-30 Series Naval Autocannons, but to increase the number carried to an astonishing thirty! Engineers also gave their new battlecruiser to ability to "reach out and touch someone" by installing a series of the new Poland 3b Naval Gauss Rifles. These new rifles would allow the Nelson to deal considerable damage to her enemies before they could return fire. These weapons then where given a large ammo storage bins to keep the weapons properly supplied. Next the ship was given enough naval lasers and PPC's to ward off all but the bravest of enemy ships and to ease the vessels dependence on projectile weaponry. Finally we installed ten of the newest Maelstrom missile launchers with enough missiles to allow almost unrestricted firing at the enemy. Aerospace Fighters, while not dangerous individually, are like hornets .... the more there are the more dangerous they can be. Therefore we have added a large number of anti-fighter energy weapons. This along with the Nelsons own fighter contingent should allow the ship to worry about the enemy's capital ships, not their defensive fighters and dropships. Next engineers decided to give the Nelson the best armor it could have. With over 2,500 tons of the new Lamellor Ferro-Carbide armor, the Nelson will survive long enough to destroy her foes. Di Tron also wanted to improve on the ships maneuverability by installing the powerful Leverton  XXc Interplanetary Drives. By installing three of these engines the Nelson is more maneuverable than the Cameron Class. With all the Star League wanted of its new battlecruiser, the ship also grew in size. By the end of all the design stages the ship came in at a massive 1,400,000 tons. While larger than originally planned, the ship performance was admirable and her weapon batteries deadly. The designers almost created a new classification for this ship, wanting to call her a "Pocket Battleship" due to her speed and armor. This was finally decided against as the Star League wanted this "battlecruiser" to be able to pounce on and destroy its opponents." With the Keid shipyards at full production they should be able to produce a Nelson class every 16 months on each of its two docks.
