Overview
Words from the original designers diary, March 12th 2766. "When the Star League Procurement Department asked for a ship more capable then the McKenna Class Battleship to help put down isolated rebellions we were hard pressed to deliver. Many things could be added, but we only had so much room to work with. Realizing there was no way to improve the ships planetary assault abilities without reducing firepower gave us fits. In the end we managed to design a ship that can easily land troops and support them to quell a planet AND perform its fleet duties. We scrapped the ships' armament and started with performance and protection. During the beginnings of the periphery rebellions several McKennas where destroyed when they where drawn into planetary defense weapons range trying to support their ground troops. To help solve this problem we placed as much armor as possible on the ships frame and around critical components so the ship could survive those enemy guns and silence them. To improve performance we added three of the new Goliath LV9b's, which are the cousins of the LV9's that are on the original McKennas. With the improved vectored thrust systems the Lexington class will be more maneuverable in low orbit to avoid planetary fire and better support her ground forces. Next were the ground forces. Taking a radical approach we decided to house the ground forces IN the ship itself. Using the same launch systems dropships use to drop Battlemechs, we would be able to launch an assault directly from the ship. Using 24 BattleMech launchers (12 on each side of the ship) and 12 Vehicle launchers (centerlined) we would be able to deploy the entire ground assault force in as little as 20 minutes. Without the massive dropships being in the way our ships guns would be able to directly support the troops once they make planetfall. Should it be impossible to launch the direct assault the ship carries 10 dropships (The ship will usually carry 3 Overlords, 3 Triumphs, 3 Condors and 1 Fortress Class Dropship). The troops and their machines can be loaded into the dropships and ferried to the planet. This offers the area commander two options of assault on a particular planet or the two can be combined to allow assaults on several parts of the planet at once. Realizing the need for a final touch we gave the Lexington Class the ability to absolutely control the space above the battlefield and in the entire system. We gave the ship eight full regiments of AeroSpace Fighters! This would allow uncontested control of all but the most heavily defended star systems. With the ground attack force figured out we had one last task, ships armament. Since we could not reproduce the McKennas massive arsenal of weapons we decided to focus on optimizing that armament. With this in mind we added four of Polands new Model 3b Naval Guass Rifles. This would allow the Lexington to seriously damage any ship that gets between it and it target planet while at extreme range. To save additional weight we downgraded the Zeus-40 Series Autocannons and replaced them with the Pontiac-25 Series Autocannons. While this did reduce the damage curve considerable, we gained a range advantage that the Zeus-40 Autocannons did not offer. We kept the same number of PPC's but downgraded them from the Kreuss XX to the Fusigon-2a models. Realizing we had saved a considerable amount of space we decided to add a larger laser weapons system. We went with the Tronel-55 Series Naval Lasers, but installed fifty of them! This added considerable to the ships long range. Finally we decided on the new Maelstrom missile launch system. This would add considerable flexibility to the ships target selection and a wise use of missiles. With the design now out of our hands and successfully simulated by the massive computers in the Testing Division, I hope to be there when this baby floats out of the space docks. God she looks good on paper!"
The new Star League realizes the flexibility this ship would afford them. Not wanting any re-designs to hamper the ships immediate production, she was left as is. With the completion of the Sirius yards, Di Tron should be able to build two of these massive beauties every 17 months, which puts the completion of the first two at mid-summer 2767. With six to build for the new Star League the yards will be very busy indeed!
