The Katyusha V is redesign of the vintage Katyusha IV, an antiquated fire support vehicle serving with the Novaia Zemlia Planetary Militia. When Katherine Steiner-Davion assumed the throne on New Avalon, she wantonly spread money around the March Militias and Planetary Guard Units. The planetary leaders of Novaia Zemlia used this influx of money to upgrade the fighting capabilities of its mechanized forces. One of the first designs to be replaced was the aging Katyusha IV, which was first designed in the aftermath of the Capellan invasion at the end of the 24th century. In testament to the simplicity of the design, most surviving Katyusha IVs remained serviceable, though were becoming a logistical nightmare to maintain.
The Novaia Zemlia planetary government issued specifications in 3061 that called for a new fire support vehicle that not only retained the simple, rugged design of the Katyusha IV, but could also deliver more ordnance to the battlefield. In the fierce bidding that followed the contracts announcement, Svobodnaia Tiazhelaia Promyshlenosti (Freedom Heavy Industries) of Novyi Irkutsk won the contract, promising a design that not only could deliver twice the fire power of its predecessor, but also having a top speed nearly 25% faster than the Katyusha IV. STP also underbid its nearest competitor by nearly half. The construction of the new vehicles, however, would be marred by numerous delays and cost overruns. The first Katyusha V's did reach the militia units until late 3066, with the first company going to the NZPM's showcase unit, the 4th Novaia Zemlia Guard Tanks. The
final production cost of nearly 80,000 C-Bills per unit, nearly twice the original bid, led to the appointment of a special prosecutor. Subsequent government investigations led to several indictments of STP officials for fraud and corruption, but no cases have yet been brought to prosecution. Several key figures, including STP's CEO have resigned their post, but the new management team has shown to be committed to fulfilling the contract. Interest has been expressed in selling the design to other PUG's in the PDZ, but so far no orders have been forthcoming.
As of yet, the new Katyusha Vs have yet to see combat. The Shutochnaia Lisa Voennyi Zavod's (Laughing Fox Armaments Factory) Predvestnik (Harbinger) missile system is capable of delivering a devastating salvo of guided munitions on target, delivering twice the ordnance more accurately than the Katyusha IV's. The system's lengthy reload time makes it unlikely that it will get off more than one shot in a moving battle, though this would be a negligible draw back in a static battle line or siege situation. A key component of this system is the STP Model 7 communications and targeting suite. So far it has proven extremely reliable and capable of coordinating accurate indirect fire. Unknown, however, is how it would perform against more modern ECM devices known to be employed by the Capellan Confederation.
