In the midst of the FedCom Civil War, the president and CEO of Wroxeter Aeronautics, Michael Winthrope, figured that whoever won the war would be seeking to rebuilt the nation's
smashed military forces. Sensing a unique business oppurtunity, he proposed to the board of directors that the time was right for Wroxeter Aeronautics, which up to this point in time had only been a make of civilian aircraft, to enter the militaty market. Already counting its profits, the board enthusiastically embraced his idea.
Having only built turbine powered civilian aircraft, it was decided that Wroxeter Aeronautics first entry in the military market would be a turbine powered conventional aircraft. Deciding earlier on that STOL capabilities would be an essential requirement, the Golden Eagles' designers reworked Wroxeter Aeronautic's civilian JETSTOL 180 into a more robust and powerful military model. Similarly, the firm's longstanding business parter,Damon Communications, was contracted to design the aircraft's electonics package. At this point, however, the company needed outside help to continue the project. Having absolutely no experience with manufacture of military grade armor, the company made arrangements to purchase a specially designed alloy from Circe Ironworks of Bristol. The most controversial and costly decision, however, was the choice of armaments. Michael Winthrope wanted a fighter with top of the line armaments that would wow the customer and in the early 3060s, no weapon in the Federated Suns was hotter than Mydron's new rotary autocannons. After extensive and costly negotiations, Wroexeter Aeronautics signed a contract for the outright purchase of 2,000 of the autocannons, with options to buy additional lots of 500 as needed. The fighter would be armed with two light rotatary autocannons with ample ammunition supplies. Critics, now including some board members, wondered if such an extravagance was warranted on an what was an unproved design. Nonetheless, the first Golden Eagle took to the air on 12 November 3066.
Early testing progressed without any mishaps and the aircraft has so far met all preformance expections. The design, being so new, has yet to see any actual combat. Interestingly enough, the name Golden Eagle has seemingly been abandoned by the pilots who have flown the fighter. Pilots have taken to calling it the "Mad Eye," after the dorsally mounted fan that is part of the vessels nearly useless STOL package. Unfortuantely for Michael Winthrope the design has so for attracted little interest. As of mid-3067 less than ten aircraft had been sold. In addition to a few militia inquires, the mercenary Hanover Dragoons, on a long term retainer with House Davion, have purchased a handful for evaluation purposes. Unless sales pick up, the expenisive contract for the Mydron autocannons could end up bankrupting the company. Unless as major contract is landed by the end of the year, it is likely that Winthrope will no longer be with the company in 3068.
