Overview
Named after the Saxon free spearmen of ancient Terra, the Fyrdman was designedas a heavy, frontline battlemech around which commanders could anchor abattleline. Heavy armour is married to considerable firepower, giving thepilot the ability to stand and deliver against mechs of all weight classes.

The Fyrdman project was commissioned by the AFFS High Command in search of a new general purpose, heavy combat battlemech. The HC was looking for a machine that could stand up to mechs of similar or greater weight class while inflicting a damage curve comparable to the Combine's 9K series of assault mechs (primarily the Atlas and Victor models).

The winning design was actually the result of a collaboration between the Kallon and Archernar military firms. Top members of both the Templar and Enforcer III design teams were selected, a creative dream-team sponsored by Duke George Hasek in an effort to promote increased unity in the post Civil War Suns.

The designers settled on a seventy five ton chassis as their choice, using the base framework of the Templar omnimech to start from. The team debated making the new design an omnimech as well, but finally vetoed the idea, as the AFFS already had access to several such designs
.
The design team spent seven months working on the particulars, as the chassis was incredibly complex given the advanced technologies they were putting to work. The final design was an elaborate union of double strength heat sinks, an extralight engine, ultralight internal skeleton, and advanced electronics. With an NAIS technologies targeting computer guiding the bristling array of direct-fire lasers, particle cannon and rotary AC, the mech met and exceeded the original firepower specifications. However, the final price tag was inordinately high. Similarly, the quartermaster corps actually disliked the idea of an additional Targeting Computer-based war machine. The number of Templars and Enforcer III 6T's in service that already used TComp systems were absorbing nearly all the spare parts and technical support crew the AFFS could spare, meaning a new design would be more of a strain than an advantage.

With their project hovering on the edge of termination, Kallon/Archenar had the choice of withdrawing the bid or redesigning. The heads of the respective companies were prepared to pull the plug when the design team asked for two weeks' time to make a design revision, and three months to
produce a working prototype, promising a machine with only a minor reduction in overall effectiveness. Reluctantly, Archenar and Kallon agreed.

The result of this decision was nothing short of outstanding. By reducing the mech's weight by 5 tons, removing the targeting computer, and modifying the class of laser weaponry, the team was able to eliminate the expensive and complex extralight engine in favor of a more durable standard engine, with no change to the primary weapons systems. Even better, the price tag was approximately half that of the original machine, making the new mech lower priced than the 50 ton Enforcer IIIs. The elimination of the complex engine actually allowed the designers to discover flaws in the actuator/engine transmission systems, which improved the maintenance profile of the mech immensely.

Impressed with the result, the Kallon/Archernar brass immediately shipped four of the new designs to the AFFS for evaluation. When the contract for a battallion's worth came back, it included a request for the new mech's name. As he was the originator, Duke Hasek was given the honor of naming the machine. When asked, the Duke smiled and replied, "The Fyrdman; Seventy tons of Saxon backbone."
