Overview
When Comstar learned the Explorer Corps Outbound Light had been the catalyst that caused the Clans to invade the Inner Sphere they were shocked. The Corps mission had been to find General Kerensky's long lost fleet as they represented the only real threat to Comstars power, and find them they did. With the fifteen year peace won at the battle of Tukayyid, and the co-operation of the Draconis Combine, the Explorer Corps launched their operation to find the Clan homeworlds. Since the Outbound Light was not required to file a planned route the Corps only had a vague idea in which direction to search. Dozens of Jumpships were dispatched disguised as merchants, traders and prospectors. After six years of searching something "interesting" was found in the system designated Julian 68-98a by the Jumpship Guiding Star. A signal beacon was discovered transmitting an old Star League code from the orbit of the third planet in the system. The Guiding Star launched a dropship to check out the mysterious signal while the jumpship prepared to use her LF batteries to make a quick escape if need be. The dropship reported back that it had found the hulls of three ships in orbit around the planet and a large facility on the surface. The condition of one of the ships could only be describes as floating junk and could not be identified. The other two vessels seemed relatively intact. The planet side facility was in shambles also. The dropship Pure Vision found an undamaged docking collar and managed to dock with the least damaged vessel. Upon entering the ship they were greeted with a sight that both shocked them and made their hearts leap with joy. A wall with the Cameron Star painted on it and a floating corpse.
After a search of all three ships a picture came together of what had happened. Apparently the base on the planet was a deep exploration base used by the Star League. The two damaged vessels were a new class of scientific ship that was meant to travel the stars to explore what lay beyond known space. When the Star League fell, Amaris the Usurper learned of the base and had dispatched the Razors Edge, one of his warships, to either destroy or capture the base and the exploration ships present. Apparently Amaris's forces did succeed and were planning to depart when the Star League forces tried to recapture their ships and ground base. The Warship opened fire on the explorer vessels and launched tactical nuclear weapons at the base below. The coup was failing and the beleaguered Star League troops finally resorted to blowing all the hatches on the exploration ships to kill all the Amaris troops, but it also meant almost all their deaths. The few Star League troops on the Razors Edge heard the last gasping breaths of their comrades on the doomed ships. Galvanized to make the warship pay for the deaths of their friends the troops fought their way to a dropship they knew was carrying extra fuel for the return trip. Once there they detonated the fuel tanks in the dropship, and the resulting explosion tore the warship apart. The few crewmen on the exploration ships that survived the decompression could not repair the damage to their ships before their supply of air was exhausted. The base below was gone and there was no hope of surviving on the inhospitable planet below without the base. Those few personnel left had gathered on the bridge of the Wandering Star and entered into the ships logs what had happened in the hope that anyone showing up to search for them understand the sacrifices made that day.
The crew on the Guiding Star gathered the bodies of the Star League personnel and properly laid them to rest. The personnel that could be identified as Amaris soldiers were jettisoned with all the other loose garbage. The dropship was left behind to begin repairs on the two ships and a skeleton crew returned on the Guiding Star to report what they had found to the Columbus base. Soon two Faslane class yard-ships appeared in system and repairs commenced. Once the ships could be pressurized recovery crews boarded the ships and began to learn what wonderful ships there where. Not only were these two ships outfitted for years of operation in deep space, but they had the very best Star League laboratories in known space at that time. Everything that a true explorer could imagine was within the hull of the ships. The two ships were returned to the Columbus base where they were refitted and pressed into service in the search for the Clans homeworlds. Fortunately, a Clansman by the name of Trent gave Comstar the homeworld locations and the Explorer vessels were never placed in harms way. With the end of the Clan threat the two vessels have returned to their duties. Both vessels, the Wandering Star and Mystical Star, port out of the Columbus base and will spend up to three
years each searching the deep reaches of space. One can only imagine what knowledge was lost with the Julian 68-98a bases destruction, or what wonders these ships will observe to find that knowledge again.
