Overview
The Exeter Infantry Fighting Vehicle is one of several new APC designs to enter service with the Federated Suns in recent years. It and others are slowly giving infantry units the flexability they need on the new battlefields where speed is one of the most inportant things to a vehicle. This new IFV is fast becoming the mainstay of fast strike infantry units in many infantry brigades.
Capabilities
Johnston Industries, maker of the Goblin IFV, won the contract from the AFFS for this new vehicle and quickly set to work. With the experience gained from years of producing the Goblin, Johnston was quickly able to put together the three working prototypes for testing. While not as heavily armored as the Goblin, the Exeter uses the same Durallex Light Ferro-Fibrous armor the Goblin uses. The smaller Exeter is also much faster than the Goblin, with a top speed anywhere from 50 to 100% faster making them more difficult to hit.
Johnston weapon specialists also corrected what was considered the only flaw in the Goblin weapons by adding a Holly LRM/5 to the Exeter. This allowed the IFV to provide long range indirect fire for its infantry unit if needed. A new Blazefire Longshot Extended Range Medium Laser was installed in the turret next to the Holly LRM launcher to ensure the IFV had a non-ammo dependant weapon for use on extended campaigns.
Johnston added a large infantry bay to the Exeter next. This unusually large bay guaranteed the Exeter could not only carry the largest infantry units, but also their support weapons if need be. The infantry bay was also designed to be able to change configuration to carry stretchers with wounded personnel or cargo. This allows the Exeter versatility that previous designs did not have.
The communications system is a modified version of the CommuTech XL that the Goblin uses, and the T&T system is OptiSight-12 made by Quicksell on Layover. While not the best system available for the Blazefire, it offers the best indirect fire computer available.
Variants
The only variant of the Exeter is the wheeled version. It carries a Beagle Active Probe that is very useful when depolyed in rough terrain and city environments.
Deployment
The Exeter has been deployed with all front-line RCT units and independant infantry regiments. The Exeter is now being deployed with March Militia units and is available for planetary garrison units, although not many of those can afford a front line vehicle like the Exeter.
