Manufacturer:  Federated Boeing
Primary Factory: Galax, New Avalon CR, Crucis March, Federated Suns

The rapid development of the Sabre is a testament to the efficiency and skill of Federated Boeing's engineers and workers.  Toward the end of 3063, Capt. Thomas Rand of the 374th Federation Fighter Wing, part of the Davion Heavy Guards' Aerospace Brigade, theorized that a prolonged civil war would have a devestating impact on the Federated Suns' naval forces.  Realizing the the Suns' shipmaking industries would be hard pressed to make up the losses, Rand proposed the creation of an "super heavy fighter" designed to escort valuable troopships through enemy naval forces.  His proposal intrigued his commanding oficers and in November, Capt. Rand was pitching his idea to a Federated Boeing design staff.  Capt. Rand
was slated to transfer to the ships evaluation team after the battle of New Avalon, but was
unfortunately killed in action over the skies of Avalon City.

The first Sabre rolled out of the factory in January 3067.  Loaded with numerous weapons systems, the escort resembles a cross between a heavy aerospace fighter and a small dropship.  It's fighter-like cockpit allows for trained fighter pilots to quickly become use to operating the larger craft.  The Sabre's weapons lay out was designed to deliver maximum firepower from the longest range possible.  The craft primary armament consists of 4 heavy missle launchers capable of devlivering 70 missles at a time, guided with deadly accuracy by the ships Artemis IV FCS.  The LRMs are backed up by twin ER large lasers mounted in the nose.  Pursuit is discouraged by an large pulse laser mounted in a ball-turret on the ship's tail. All three laser systems are tied into the vessel's advanced targeting computer for increased accuracy.  Almost as an after thought, the ship's designer added a short range missle mount to the nose to improve the escort's infighting ability.  The Sabre also boasts 26 tons of standard armor and enough double heat sinks to handle the waste heat of its
entire weapon load.

What the ship lacks, however, is comfort for its five man crew.  Intended for short range missions only, the designers included only minimal crew amenities.  The small cargo hold behind the cockpit has a small galley and enough space to mount a couple of hammocks to allow for crew rest on any long flights.  The Sabre carries only four tons of fuel, so is dependant on dropships for any long range deployment.

Despite the newness of the vessel, one variant has already appeared.  In 3066, designers proposed altering the missle heavy weapons lay out.  The wing mounted LRMs were swapped for two of the new rotary autocannons, which were tied into the ship's sophisticated targetting computer.  Crews, who dubbed this variant "SuperSabre" are apparently pleased by the increase in firepower, though it requires them to engage their targets at a closer range.  Both variants are currently undergoing evaluation trials with the AFFS.  Neither have seen combat to this date, though that is expected to change shortly as several Sabres
are currently enroute to the disputed Tikonov system.
