Overview
When the Clans returned with the goal of over running the Inner Sphere they returned with many warships. The last Inner Sphere warships had been destroyed near the end of the 2nd Succession War over Hesperus, and this pretty much left the Inner Sphere wide open to warship assaults. Intelligence operatives of the Federated Commonwealth labored hard to get as much information on the Clans as possible in an effort to find a way to defeat them and their large warship fleets. In an accidental encounter in the periphery Task Force Serpent encountered a Ghost Bear naval flotilla. One of the ships in that flotilla was the Fire Fang .... which use to be a Davion Class Destroyer! In the encounter the Fire Fang was damaged and captured. Repaired and returned to operation the Fire Fang was insturmental in the success of the TF Serpent over Huntress. After the success of Task Force Serpent and their return to the Inner Sphere the Fire Fang was studied by Federated Commonwealth military personnel and compared to old records. The ship was the Argyle and was one of the ships the Federated Suns has initially leased, and later sold, to the Star League. The Argyle was thought to have been destroyed in the final assault on the Terran system during the liberation of Terra. The Federated Commonwealth government petitioned the Star League for the ship to be released to them as part of the repariation for the high costs the FedCom had paid in material and men, but after years of delays it looks as if the Argyle will remain in Star League hands. The Federated Commonwealth is now a footnote in history and the Federated Suns is in the process of rebuilding a shattered nation. But rumors abound about the revival of the Davion Class Destroyer and how it could help rebuild the pride of a nation and it military.
Capabilities
With the discovery of the true identity of the Fire Fang, engineers at Universal Air brought out the design schematics for the Davion Destroyer and compared it to the current layout of the Fire Fang. Back in the era when the Argyle had been purchased along with 18 other Davion Destroyers by the SLDF, naval philosophies concentrated on warships carrying capital weapons and attacking one another, and not on weapons that could fend off Aerospace Fighters. The design of the Davion was rethought and modified to carry a deadly array of weapons not available back when the Davion's were first constructed. Designers completely scrapped the old weapons load and started from scratch. Starting with the capital weapons it was decided that twenty six Johnston Model M-3 Medium Naval PPC's would be installed into the ship to give it a respectable long range punch and to reduce the Davion's dependance on
ammunition hungry weapons. Then five Poland 2c Medium Naval Gauss guns and four Federated-30 Series, Model 1b Naval Autocannons were installed to give the ship the ability to punch holes in enemy ships armor. To round out the ships capital armament a trio of Federated Multi-M AR10 Launchers were installed. Next designers went to work on the ships smaller weapons designed to protect the ship from dangerous swarms of Aerospace Fighters. The primary
weapons loadout would be a mix of twenty six BlazeFire Sweetshot ER Large Lasers, twenty three Johnston High Speed ER PPC's and twenty five Dragon's Fire Gauss Rifles that are spread evenly around the ship. For close in weaponry twenty four Defiance Disintegrator LB 20-X AC's were installed. These powerful weapons will put out a deadly hail of submunitions that will deter all but the most suicidal of fighter pilots. Finally twenty four McArthur Anti-Missile Systems were installed to help protect the ship from any enemy long range missile fire. Three Delta Spreader Screen Launchers were installed to allow the ship to provide cover for damaged friendly ships and protect itself if forced to retreat from the system. The Davion's new weapons load-out would allow the ship to compete with any Clan vessel and many of the new Inner Sphere designs currently used.
The Davion was also given two squadrons of aerospace fighters that would further enable it to defend itself against enemy aerospace fighters. Additionally four small craft bays (of which two are NL-42 BattleTaxis) and six squads of Battlearmor troops were placed on the ship. This allows the Davion to perform limited boarding actions on damaged or crippled enemy ships.
The ships frame was strengthed and the newest Johnston Duraweave 9000n grade of armor was installed. This gave the vessel superior armor protection over the Fire Fang and other similiar ships. Of course all of these modifications and improvements came at the cost of the Davion's cargo carrying capacity. While the ship still has a credable cargo capacity of almost 7,000 tons, it is not near the 65,000 tons the ship originally had. Designers and military officials have high hopes for the new Davions and hope to see the keel of the first two laid within the next two to four years.
